How it works
About internationalised domain names
Why Punycode exists
DNS only allows letters, digits and hyphens. IDNs are stored as Punycode labels that start with xn--, and browsers show the Unicode form to visitors.
Where to use which form
DNS records, certificates, server configuration and most APIs need the xn-- form. Use the Unicode form for display and marketing.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I register a Chinese or accented domain?
Yes, for extensions that support IDNs. Search the Unicode name in our domain search.
Why does my browser show xn-- instead of the name?
Browsers show Punycode when a name mixes scripts in a way that could be used for look-alike phishing.
